New Production Blog Entry August 31st, 2010 Anxious to see the new set? www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/New Location By SVUMac on August 31, 2010 6:41 PM If you've been following the news, it will come as no surprise that we've built an entirely new precinct set this season. As sad as it is, we had to say farewell to our former set that housed us for 11 seasons. I don't think anyone will be upset to see our new look. Here at the SVU Production Blog, I give you the very first look inside our new precinct, only about 65% done. What do you think of the space? Thoughts? Leave me some comments. We want your feedback! You'll notice that the setup is very different. Any guesses where Stabler and Benson's desks will go? Season premiere with BACK-TO-BACK episodes starts on 9/22 at 9/8c!!!! Click on link for vid.

Production Blog updated 09/15/10 www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/Hello yet again! By SVUMac on September 15, 2010 4:03 PM Answer to the question of where Stabler's and Benson's desks will be: they will now be right outside the door of Cragen's office. That's the complete opposite end of the squad room from cages. They will also be turned the opposite way as they were in the old squad room. Let me get right to answering some of your questions from my last post: Q: Are we reusing the old Law & Order sets or have those been torn down? A: Our new squad room replaces all DA sets and the L&O squad room. We have kept some pieces of those sets to be incorporated into ours (i.e. the elevators, stairs, some windows, etc.) but all the major things have been replaced. However, we are using the original courtroom set from L&O, and for the time being we are also using the hospital sets. So some of the old, and some of the new will be around in Season 12 of SVU. Q: Where is the ADA's office in the new set? A: There is no ADA's office in the new precinct set. Just like in our old space for SVU, the ADA's office is on a different set. However, that too will be new this year. Lastly, wanted to give you some on set photos of our very first scene in our brand-new sets, shot yesterday for Episode 5, called "Wet." 3 pics follow including a real cute pic of Belzer and his dog Bebe who is sitting under the Belz' desk! As always, ask some questions. Curious about anything from the photos? Have any other comments or thoughts? Post them! ABOUT A WEEK AWAY FROM SEASON 12!!!

Production Blog was updated Sept. 22nd. More pics of the new set and some questions answered. Keep in mind this was before Locum/Bullseye aired. www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/HEY By SVUMac on September 22, 2010 1:48 PM Another day, yet another new set here at SVU. Now that we are pretty much done with the new precinct set, we've started to move on to some of the smaller sets. Here's our new morgue set. It's right next to the courtroom and is much larger then our morgue set from the previous seasons. Thanks for the comments/questions. You keep posting them, I'll do my best to keep answering them. Q: Are the computers the detectives use fully functional? A: Yes, they are working computers. However, often what you see them doing on the screens is being controlled by a crewmember off camera. For example when you see one of our detectives typing on their keyboard or changing the photos on the huge flat screen monitors, that's really being controlled by someone on the crew. Q: How difficult was it having to move/build the set? A: Our precinct set is pretty much brand new. So not much of the old set was moved. There are some common set elements though, such as the city backdrops and some of the windows. What has moved from the old set is all the set dressing (screens, desks, stuff on the walls, etc.). I wouldn't say it was hard, but more time consuming to pack everything up and transport it. Q: Are there any new romances this season? A: I think it's safe to say if you watch tomorrow there may be some sparks flying.... Q: Is the captain returning this year? A: Yes, Captain Cragen is still our captain. SEASON 12 PREMIERE TONIGHT, WITH BACK TO BACK NEW EPISODES!!! 3 more pics.

The Production Blog for Sept. 24th features a blog by Mariska regarding the rape kit backlog and next weeks episode BEHAVE which deals with this issue. Making A DifferenceOver the course of my 12 years playing detective Olivia Benson on Law and Order: SVU, I have learned a great deal about sexual violence in the United States. I wish our storylines were pure fiction, but all too often, the horrific stories we tell on our show are based on harsh, sobering, troubling realities. This is especially true of our next episode "Behave," airing Wednesday, September 29th. The show deals with an issue I care about deeply - the rape kit backlog. When a person reports a sexual assault, she - or he - will be asked to undergo a sexual assault evidence collection kit (a "rape kit") exam, a four- to six-hour process to collect DNA evidence from his or her body. Rape kit testing can identify an unknown assailant, confirm a suspect's contact with the victim, corroborate the victim's account of the assault, identify serial rapists by connecting crime scene evidence from separate incidents, and exonerate innocent suspects. Yet experts, including the Department of Justice and members of Congress, have estimated that hundreds of thousands of rape kits are sitting untested in police and crime labs throughout the country. We know rape kit testing works. National studies have shown that cases in which rape kit evidence was tested and introduced were more likely to advance through the criminal justice system and lead to arrests. New York City's arrest rate for rape rose from 40% to 70% once it adopted the policy to test every booked rape kit. In Los Angeles, a recent decision to test every booked rape kit resulted in 405 hits in the FBI DNA database. Yet the benefit of testing rape kits goes beyond providing prosecutors with investigative tools to bring offenders to justice. It goes beyond introducing the clarity of DNA evidence into the arena of rape and sexual assault, the crimes with the lowest reporting, arrest, and prosecution rates in the United States. These kits represent human beings who have suffered greatly. Testing victims' rape kits sends them the fundamental and crucial message that they and their cases matter. One of the most rewarding aspects of working on SVU is the show's ability to shine a light on the problem of sexual violence. This next episode is one of the most meaningful I have ever done, and it stands as a powerful example of the way we aim to raise awareness about these difficult issues. In addition to my role on Law and Order: SVU, I am also the founder and president of the Joyful Heart Foundation, an organization that works to bring healing, education, and empowerment to survivors and awareness to the public about sexual and family violence. When I first learned about the rape kit backlog, I was shocked that something like this could exist in the United States. Then my foundation and I were moved to action. And we are not alone; law enforcement, public officials, and advocates - and now you - are with us. Recently, I heard from a rape victim whose kit was tested 13 years after she was raped. Thirteen years. The DNA in her kit matched the profile of a convicted rapist already in prison. Learning the identity of her rapists, and that he was in a place where he could not hurt her, gave this woman a sense of peace for the first time since she was raped. It is for this woman and all the others like her that I am committed to doing my part to end the rape kit backlog. I hope you will join us in this cause. Together, we can end the backlog and bring justice to survivors. Tune in on Wednesday, September 29th, to our next episode of Law and Order: SVU. Then go to endthebacklog.org to learn more and take action. I will be watching - and I hope you and your community will be too. www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/

www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/By SVUMac on October 6, 2010 2:48 PM Hi! Quick thanks to Mariska for her powerful blog post from last week. It was a very important episode to her and all of us here at SVU. Again, for more information and to help, visit endthebacklog.org/I think Jennifer Love Hewitt's performance last week was one of the best I've seen in the seven seasons I've been on the show. Here's a quick behind-the-scenes photo grabbed during a lighting set up. Every year around this time NBC shoots the new promos for the show. This includes the branding shoots. Here's last year's: We just shot the new ones a few weeks ago, which is never a small task. NBC sends a crew to scout locations in and around our set, they hire a special crew, have to get permits from the city, etc. So it's a full-blown shoot. Here are some behind-the-scenes shots/videos from the shoot that you won't see anywhere else! I'll be sure to post the completed product once it's available. Tonight's episode is a special one to us SVUers... it's the last time you'll see our home for the previous 11 seasons. We say good-bye to our old precinct tonight at 9/8c. Enjoy!

Special Props
By SVUMac on October 13, 2010 9:30 PM
Happy Wednesday.
Tonight's episode "Wet" had some psychedelic props that needed some special attention.
pics of mushrooms follow:
These guys need some extra work, as they were supposed to be rare South American specimens. We didn't want them to look like ordinary mushrooms from a field. And obviously we couldn't get our hands on the real ones. So with the magic of TV (and our hard working scenic and props departments) we made them unique on our own. We changed these:
pics
Into these: more pics
Our scenic hand painted the tops of all these mushrooms red and our props crew inserted the white specs, which are just white sprinkles used on top of cakes!
This episode also challenged us with a different obstacle as well. When watching the show tonight, the episode will open near a very famous fountain here in NYC. However, shooting restrictions prevented us from actually being in the water of the actual fountain. Did that stop us? Nope, we took a different approach:
pics of fountain
We decided to shoot all of the exteriors at the actual fountain, and then when we had to be in the water, we built an indoor replica of it at our stages, with living plants and all...
Keep an eye out tonight during the opening of this week's show, and see if you can tell the difference.
Have a good week and enjoy tonight's show!!!
