Production Blog was updated on Feb. 24th. www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/By SVUMac on February 24, 2010 2:11 PM Hello everyone, We return to new episodes in a week. Remember, on Wednesday March 3, there are TWO new episodes of SVU back-to-back, starting at 9/8c. From that point on, a new episode will air at our NEW time, 10/9c on Wednesdays. Even though new episodes haven't been airing, we haven't stop shooting them. We are currently shooting Episodes 18 and 19 in tandem as we speak. We've also started to prep Episode 20, which is Sharon Stone's premiere episode. Get ready for a hot episode, I promise! (It is called "Torch.") It's been a while since I've given you some pictures, so I figured you're overdue for some new set shots. We often do some preproduction video shoots in which we have a little amount of time to shoot a lot of stuff. So when our production designer Dean Taucher is creating the sets, he often incorporates numerous sets into one. With set dressing alterations, you can see how we took what is supposed to be a mattress commercial set and transformed it into three different mattress commercial sets in a short period of time. Keep your eyes open for these sets in Episode 18! Just want to hit one quick question: Ladybug asked: How come the back-to-back new episodes are playing out of order with Ep. 14 and Ep. 16? The thing with our show and with all the Law & Orders is that they usually don't need to be aired in shooting order. So we can really air our episodes any way we want. Sometimes there are constraints with doing something like that. For example, when Christine Lahti was here, her character had a four-episode arc so we had to stick to a specific airing order for that arc to work. Come back early next week for a new post!

This was a very good blog update. I never thought about how the sets are really done. My hat is off to the crew.

OOPS! I forgot to post the blog for March 3rd and there is a new one for March 10th so I will post them both. Big NightBy SVUMac on March 3, 2010 4:01 PM Tonight's a big night! It's the first time we have two ALL- NEW episodes in one night since I've been here. Starting off with "P.C." starring Kathy Griffin followed by "Savior" starring Mischa Barton. All starts at 9/8c, so enjoy two full hours of SVU tonight! Ever wonder why when you see a script they are multi colored? Some pages are blue, some are pink, and maybe some green? The reason is every time we make a revision to the script, they are published in a different color. This is to avoid having to publish/distribute an entre script every time a few revision pages come out. We can just "collate" in the new color revision pages into the previous version of the script. Here's some industry knowledge for you, the order of revision page colors: white, blue, pink, yellow, green, gold, salmon, and cherry. However on our show we do a modified order: WHITE to BLUE to PINK to YELLOW to GREEN (and then repeat). So check it out, for Episode #20, "Torch." Here's the progression of script cover pages: As you can see: we start with a FULL WHITE Script, then went to a FULL BLUE SCRIPT (therefore replacing the White one). After the blue we got some revision pages (as specified on the pink and yellow covers) and collated them into the blue script. Finally today we go a new FULL GREEN Script, which will replace all previous versions. Simple as pie! ENJOY TONIGHT'S SHOW and ask any questions you want! Marking ActorsBy SVUMac on March 10, 2010 12:13 PM Charlie from the camera department was nice enough to help us out again. Today he took some time to explain what a "mark" is. Ever hear an actor say, "I missed my mark...?" Well, thanks to Charlie you'll now know what that means. Welcome back to Charlie's Camera Corner. Marking actors is a critical and very important part of blocking and shooting a scene. We place marks on the floor during rehearsals for all the actors every time they stop, make a move, walk and talk, or deliver a line of dialogue. Actors rely on these marks to remember where to stand during each take throughout the scene. The camera department uses the marks for focus and zoom measurements. The DP or Cinematographer uses them for lighting purposes. Each Actor/character on SVU has a different and very specific marking color: Chris Meloni/Stabler = BLUE Mariska Hargitay/Benson = Pink Dann Florek/Cragen = Orange Ice-T/Fin = Red Richard Belzer/Munch = Green Stephanie March/ Cabot = Yellow These different colors make things easier and blocking and rehearsing less confusing for each actor as they will automatically know their own color and hit their marks. Sometimes you have a scene with numerous actors, actions, movements, and lines. It's easy for things to get confusing fast. The marks we lay down act as a road map that is used to help the cast and crew get through a scene faster. Special thanks to John and Scott from the Camera Department for their cameos! NEW EPISODE TONIGHT - "Confidential," 10/9c Let's make it a Trending Topic on Twitter! www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/Go to the blog page for a few pics.

Here are the Production Blogs for March 17th & 24th. The Blog on March 17th is all about the "Enough Project." Enough Project: Congo's Women on the Front Lines of a War for Wealthwww.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/The Blog on March 24th has a few more set pics including Sharon Stone's chair. Happy Wednesday! Here's behind-the-scenes shots to get your SVU day going... pic of Sharon Stone's chair... As you can see we are shooting in the courtroom today, so naturally our ADA is present. Thank you for all the great feedback from last week's show. I really want to thank Sylvie Maunga for the great blog post last week. Let's do some Q&A today: iKatt asked why has SVU moved to 10/9c and what show got bumped? We moved back to 10pm once The Jay Leno Show stopped airing. Nothing got bumped. We went back to 10pm because that was our time slot up until this year. Summer asked how do you guys pick the guest stars to play a role in an episode? Well that's a team effort. We have an amazing casting director, Jonathan Strauss, who along with Neal Baer (our show runner), Ted Kotcheff (our executive producer) and our shooting directors, come up with amazing talent from the actors' pool. Sometimes we have actors in mind before we write a script and sometimes actors come to mind after the character has been written. For more information relevant to casting, feel free to ask Jonathan Strauss on twitter: @jscasting Don't forget to watch an all-new SVU 10/9c on NBC TONIGHT!

Here are the Blogs for March 31st & April 7th. April 7thNew SVUIt's Wednesday again, and you know what that means: another new SVU tonight! Today Andrew from the sound department and Charles our sound mixer were nice enough to explain some things from the sound side of the show. So without delay, here's Andrew's Audio Arena (not to be confused with Charlie's Camera Corner...) Charles, our sound mixer, relies on me to set up the "sides" for him in the morning. Each actor has a color assigned to him/her just like he/she has marks. I use highlighters to indicate which actor is speaking and then I set the sides up on his cart so he can view them while he is mixing. In the morning I set up all the comteks for producers and the director to listen to the actors. The dialogue is critical in this show and so is the timing, so the director and script supervisor must be able to hear what's going on at all times. When an actor's dialogue can't be recorded effectively with a boom mic, I will place a wireless microphone on the actor's body to help enhance the sound so it won't be so "empty" when you watch the show. If the boom mic can't get close, a well-hidden wireless mic can! Lastly, a few weeks back Charlie from the camera department mentioned what the slate is and how the camera department uses it. It's actually a very integral part of production for the sound department as well. Editors use the time code to sync the video and the audio. Before every take the "clap" sound, plus the image of the slate "clapping" is what the editors use to identify and match the start of the scene. Enjoy "Conned" tonight at 10/9c Remember to follow these names on Twitter: : @nealbaer @svumac @jscasting @nbcsvu @mickbetancourt @finallevel Go to the blog for several pics.March 31st
Back To The 70'sI hoped you liked the sneak peek of some of the "Mattress Maestro" commercials we posted earlier this week. If you haven't seen them yet, just look at my earlier posts. Those videos were the product of what I posted about a few weeks ago, you can see it here: www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/new-time/I think the sets turned out pretty great, what do you think? How does the "Mattress Maestro" relate to SVU??? Tonight all will be revealed at 10/9c in SVU's "Bedtime." We had some great guest stars for this one, led by Ann-Margret and Jaclyn Smith. Meeting one of the original Charlie's Angels was awesome. She was so sweet and a pleasure to work with. I was also able to be on set for Ann-Margret's first interrogation scene. WOW! You are in for a treat tonight. Her acting left some of our most seasoned crew members in awe, and it was a delight for us SVU-ers to watch her. In addition, we had some great cameos by Morgan Fairchild, Susan Anton, and Renee Taylor. Morgan Fairchild was nice enough to share one of her own behind-the-scene photos for us to enjoy. Spoiler alert! Part of this week's story revolves around gorgeous models from the 1970s. It wasn't hard to find beautiful photos of our ladies from back in the day, and we were able make them into headshots and use them in the show. Here are two of them: Go to the blog for a pic of Chris with Morgan Fairchild in addition to the 2 pics mentioned.

www.nbc.com/Law_and_Order_Special_Victims_Unit/production-blog/Hey EveryoneProduction blog was updated 5/12/10. Its mostly set pics. So shooting for Season 11 has come to an end. There are only two more episodes to air (tear). And Sharon Stone's back in action tonight. Do you ever wonder what happens at our stages for the short periods of time when we aren't shooting? Took a minute today to walk the sets and snap some photos for you to see what's happening here at SVU. Check it out: The sets that don't need any work done on them (i.e. repairs, remodeling, painting, etc.) we just cover up and protect. For example here are photos of the squad room, Cragen's office, interview room and the morgue. Here are some sets we are doing work on. The courtroom and interrogation room floors needed to be redone. Courtroom's floor is basically done and the paint is just drying: Interrogation room floor is just starting. I know it looks strange with no walls up, but I promise it is the interrogation room. Enjoy tonight's show, "Wannabe"!
