I know this is heartbreaking to many. I always admired him. It is a shame his legacy is marred by a serious lack of judgement. RIP Joe.

he made a poor judgement call into who to tell about the abuse after he heard about it second hand in the first place but he was a great coach nonetheless who deserved way more respect than he got before he died

He told of the abuse but years later the media made him a scapegoat so that people who dont follow football or know his legacy remember him for this. Good post Nikki. I agree. He did report it but I guess not good enough for a blood thristy media out to destroy him. The only other coach that can ever compare to him is Vince Lombardi.

yeah here in PA they destroyed the mans rep for months and then have been praising his name making out to be a God since the weekend reports of calling him dead a few hours too early. him and the Florida coach were competing for most winningest coach in college but thats because both coached for 45 and 46yrs respectively lol

honestly that's probably the only reason I know the name. I like football and know more NFL than college, I didn't hear all of the story but I gathered he knew something and kept it secret for a while.
True poor judgement for sure, but many are guilty of that. And I agree sad that this is now part of his legacy.

He did not keep it secret. He reported it directly to a higher up. He did not call the police nor was he an eye witness.

it was "taken care of" within...McQueary (the eye witness who was a Grad assistant at the time) told his father that night who told him to tell JoPa in the morning, the him, JoPa, the EVP of the school had a meeting, after that it was like a game of telephone where one person says something and so on and by the end the story changed a lot including the eye witness' recount of his own story. and btw after McQueary graduated he was automatically given a cash payment and a job on JoPa coaching staff

WOW I didnt know that Nikki. I still think it is a shame that a man who put Penn State on the map could be treatwd so poorly.

all we did in my Soc class yesterday was go over the whole case in groups and i am really sick of talking about it and hearing about it too...all this originated back in the mid-late 90s so this is only sounding bad now over a decade after everything actually occurred...also ALL of Sandusky's children are adopted so who the hell knows what he may have put them through without anyone knowing and now all these kids just from the Second Mile are coming forward as adults
