Here is an excellent critique of Mariska's speech. Thanks to cocoa at svufans.net and butter at mh.org. apageofmyown.com/2010/05/19/wednesday-words-11/May 19, 2010 by Walker Every discipline or profession has it’s own ‘lingo’ and if you’re not one of the ‘in crowd’ you might not realize how crucial those words are, or what their meaning is. Last night I attended the premiere of a PBS documentary, Telling Amy’s Story-about the death of a young woman at the hands of her husband. It’s story of domestic violence. As a board member for the Virginia Alliance of Sexual and Domestic Violence, the membership agency for local agencies across the state, I was invited to attend. The opening, sponsored by Verizon was held at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. and featured Mariska Hargitay. Her foundation, Joyful Hope was one of the documentary’s sponsors, along with Verizon. When Ms. Hargitay spoke, she gave a great speech, using language that indicated a thorough understanding of the issues involved in violence against women. She called the room to action as she talked about a coordinated community response. CCR refers, to those of us who work in the field, to a structured group of professionals working together to coordinate the response each agency or court provides for domestic violence. Sexual violence has its own, but different group, a Sexual Assault Response Team. I was struck by the eloquence of the speech she gave; how well it was written as well as her presentation of it. The context was familiar so I was looking at it from a slightly removed place. As I listened I had two thoughts; one-I could be a speechwriter and the other a general thought about how we string words together and give them a great meaning. We do need a community response to violence against women and children. Not just in the form of law officers and crisis centers but a coming together of individuals speaking out against violence as they see it, of individuals supporting and assisting potential victims. We have to do something to change this pattern of abuse. Telling Amy’s Story is a compelling glimpse into all the little pieces of a history that ultimately ended in the death of a young woman. If you want to watch it, go to PBS and find the schedule. It begins airing tonight.
